Grand Bahama Island Events

The best way to see the cultural side of Grand Bahama Island is to participate in one of the island’s annual cultural or historical events that will allow you to experience the past and present of our Bahamian paradise. Plan your vacation around one of these special events and you won’t be disappointed.

Grand Bahama National Holiday Celebrations

Grand Bahama celebrates most American holidays, and there are two days in the year that are significant to Bahamians. On July 10th, the Islands of The Bahamas recognize their own independence from Great Britain. August 1st, 1834 marks the end of slavery in the British Empire and is known as Emancipation Day. Both Bahamian national holidays are celebrated with a variety of island entertainment.

Grand Bahama Local Traditional Events

There are many cultural events held year-round on Grand Bahama Island. Port Lucaya Marketplace has local evening entertainment that is sure to satisfy your craving for Bahamian culture. Catch an authentic Native Show with mezmerizing fire dancers and performers, while feasting on a variety of sumptuous dishes.

Junkanoo Festival

The Junkanoo Festival is an important Bahamian cultural event. With a vibrant parade featuring striking handmade costumes and indigenous music, the festival recognizes a special event in the history of The Island of The Bahamas. During the pre-Emancipation era, slaves were given 3 days off: December 25th and 26th and January 1st. To commemorate this special occasion, the slaves celebrated and the Junkanoo Festival was born. The festival’s parade takes place on East Mall Drive on December 26th and again on January 1st. Junkanoo brings together men and women from various parts of the community in this great celebration of history and culture.

Junkanoo is celebrated in the summer as well, with the month-long Junkanoo Festival from mid-July to mid-August. Check with your chosen hotel for specific dates, and plan your trip to experience these vibrant celebrations. For suggestions on other special events taking place on Grand Bahama Island, check out Festivals & Events.
